Juan Martin Del Potro defeated Andy Murray in a five hour marathon match in the semi finals of the Davis Cup. With the win Del Potro gave Argentina versus Great Britain, who are currently the title holders of the Davis Cup. Del Potro, who is ranked number 64 in the world after a long term wrist injury, took five hours in a thrilling match to defeat Murray on home turf in Glasgow 6-4, 5-7, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4.
Andy Murray had the upper hand up until the third set, but even then Del Potro failed to take the setpoint. A toilet break changed the course of the match as Del Potro played like he was reborn. Del Potro cruised in the fourth set and broke the Scotsman’s serve in the seventh game of the final set. Del Potro took the match with an ace.
It was Murray’s first defeat ever on home turf. He won the Brits the Davis Cup last year with win over Belgium.
Murray and Del Potro stood in the final of the Rio, Olympics last month. Murray won the match and defended his olympic gold with a four set win over the Argentinan 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. Kyle Edmund, thought of a comeback for the Brits but after winning the first set, Guido Pella proved too much 7-6, 4-6, 3-6, 2-6.
France – Croatia
The other semi final is between France and Croatia. Richard Gasquet gave France the lead with a convincing win over Borna Coric 6-2, 7-6 (5), 6-1.
Marin Cilic tied the Croats with a win over French Lucas Pouille, who reached the US Open Quarterfinals in four sets 6-1, 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-2.
