Who will win the US Open 2016?

Serena Williams at the US Open 2016

The US Open is well underway and while your local bookmaker is still figuring out the odds to see who will win the  2016 edition on either side , we give you the rundown.  Is it going to be Serena Williams? Williams is currently breaking all records. Martina Navratilova’s 306 matches won at a Grand Slam, Steffi Graf’s 22 Grand Slam is going to be next on Williams’ list most likely.

Who are the other contenders? Angelique Kerber is one.  Kerber is having the best season of her career. Kerber won the Australian Open, reached the finals of Wimbledon and took home silver at the Olympic Games in Rio. Kerber reached the quarters after defeating Petra Kvitova in straight sets nonetheless 6-3 7-5.  Might Kerber win the tournament then she will takeover that prestigious top spot on the WTA Rankings from Serena Williams. Who else is down for a showdown between Kerber and Serena, say “aye”!

The Caroline Wozniacki resurgence

Caroline Wozniacki, now you may say nay but I am adding her to the list as an outsider. Wozniacki’s rankings may have dropped to number 74 on the world rankings, but her win over Madison Keys showed that she’s still got game. Will it be enough? I don’t know but seeing her reach the quarters gives me hope for the future.

About her resurgence, Wozniacki had the following to say to the press:

“I know it sounds bad, but honestly, at this point I’m like, I really don’t care what my ranking is,” Wozniacki said.

“If I’m not in the top five I feel like it’s not where I want to be so whether I’m 20 in the world or 100, it doesn’t matter because I’m going to play the same people anyway.

“The main thing is that when I’m on court I have to believe in myself. I know I can beat anyone.

“I think it just sucks for some of the other players who have to play me early.”

Wozniacki will now face Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova.

And then there is Karolina Pliskova. Pliskova is known for her marvelous tattoo but will know also be known as the girl who ousted Venus Williams on the road to the quarters. Can she be the tournament revelation?

Tune in and find out!
