The All England Club has stood firm in its desire to keep the middle Sunday at Wimbledon free despite calls from the likes of Novak Djokovic and Stanislas Wawrinka to play games over the entire weekend.
Djokovic has been heavily backed in the tennis betting markets to win the second Wimbledon title of his career this year but bad weather has hampered his bid.
While Andy Murray’s progress has been serene, the Serb’s challenge was not helped by the bad weather on Saturday, while Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka only played two matches in the first week.
Djokovic had called for Wimbledon to “rethink” its policy, particularly as the weather in London on Sunday was perfect for tennis after Saturday’s play had been ruined by the rain.
However, Wimbledon insists their grass courts need time to recover and that playing 14 consecutive days on it would cause faster deterioration of the surface.
Wawrinka and Djokovic may have a point but the All England Club aren’t for turning. Tradition is the name of the game at SW19, along with strawberries and cream, moaning about the rain, and trying not to laugh at the various groans and grunts being emitted from the players’ mouths. Speaking of which, ahead of this year’s tournament, Betfair have put together a compilation of the best groans from tournaments past.
