Maria Sharapova is clear favourite in the tennis odds to defend her French Open crown this summer after a magnificent start to 2013.
The Russian world number two – currently into the semi finals at the Miami Masters – has won 18 of 20 matches this season but that doesn’t tell the whole story.
For Sharapova is on scintillating form and as yet hasn’t dropped a set during a competitive match she has won this campaign, meaning that while her confidence is sky high her fitness levels are through the roof.
To date she has played 40 sets of competitive tennis, losing just four and winning seven by love. Her determination and drive has seen her into the semis at Melbourne and Doha and claim the Indian Wells title earlier this March.
This kind of form is rarely seen on the WTA tour and Sharapova must take full advantage when she arrives at Roland Garros this June.
Although the French Open is still many weeks away the foundations to any Grand Slam victory begin with good preparation and by avoiding injuries up until now Sharapova is primed to defend her title.
Unlike her two main rivals – Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka – the Russian has staved off injury by powering through opponents and not wasting time dropping sets.
Before now and June she has three tournaments to set herself and tennis betting fans can expect her to sweep through the first with ease: Germany’s Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart later this April.
Conserving her energies and making good use of the few matches she plays has served Sharapova well this spring and when she hits the Madrid and Rome clay later in the year she’ll be ready to win a fifth Grand Slam crown.
